Why shutters

More than a window covering — they become part of the room

Blinds wear out. Curtains date. Shutters stay. Here's what makes them worth choosing over the alternatives.

  • Precise light control — at any angle

The tilt rod rotates every louvre simultaneously — from fully open to fully closed, with every angle in between. You can direct light upward toward the ceiling or filter it gently into the room. No roller blind, curtain, or Venetian can match this level of control.

  • Thermal and acoustic performance

Closed shutters trap a still air mass between the panel face and the glass. This reduces heat loss through older windows noticeably and dampens external noise — particularly useful on street-facing bedrooms and front rooms in period properties.

  • Completely cord-free — child-safe by design

Every shutter we fit operates by hand with no hanging cords or chains at any point. Panels fold on hinges and louvres tilt via a rigid rod. The entire system meets current UK child safety regulations in its standard configuration.

  • Built once — lasts decades

A well-fitted hardwood shutter typically lasts 25 years or more. The hinges are stainless steel, the tilt rod mechanism is adjustable, and the painted surface can be touched up without replacing the shutter. No other window covering comes close for longevity.

Frame & louvre materials

Three materials — right for different rooms and uses

The style is the shape. The material is what it's made from. They're independent choices — pick the style first, then the material that suits the room.

Premium material
Hardwood

Kiln-dried solid timber — basswood, paulownia, or oak. Painted, stained, or oiled. The right choice for south-facing rooms, period properties, and anywhere that sees significant temperature variation. Lasts longest under daily use.

Hardwood shutters
Most popular
MDF

Painted MDF takes a smoother, more consistent finish than timber. Stable in well-heated rooms, cost-effective for larger windows, and visually indistinguishable from painted hardwood. The best choice for living rooms and bedrooms with normal indoor conditions.

MDF shutters
Best for moisture
Faux Wood

ABS polymer louvres on solid timber frames — completely waterproof, non-porous, and impervious to humidity. The practical choice for bathrooms, kitchens, and conservatories. Also the material used in our Express Shutters service — fitted within 2 weeks.

Susan M. Full height shutters — Harrogate
★★★★★

"We went with café style for the front bay and they've made a real difference — the room is so much brighter during the day and we don't feel overlooked from the street anymore. Brilliant quality."

Paul & Andrea K. Café style shutters — Chester
★★★★★

"I had arched windows at the top of my staircase that had been bare for years because nothing seemed to fit properly. The shaped shutters look like they were always meant to be there. Very impressed."

Questions

Shutter questions, answered honestly

Anything else? Ask us at survey — there's no obligation and we're not going to push you toward the most expensive option.

What's the difference between the shutter styles?

Full height covers the whole window with one panel set. Café style covers the lower half only, leaving the top pane open. Tier-on-tier covers the full window but splits into two independently operated halves. Solid panel has no louvres — just a clean board face. Shaped covers arched or curved sections above a rectangular panel. Tracked door slides rather than hinges, for use on French and patio doors.

Which shutter style is right for my window?

Full height suits most situations — it's the default for a reason. Café style is best where you want privacy at street level without losing daylight from the top. Tier-on-tier suits tall sash windows in period homes where you want independent control at each level. Solid panel suits bedrooms needing total blackout or rooms where traditional panelled joinery is the right aesthetic. We'll advise at survey.

Are shutters child-safe?

Yes — every shutter style we fit is completely cord-free. Panels open by hand on hinges and louvres tilt via a rigid tilt rod. There are no hanging cords or chain controls at any point in the system. All styles meet current UK child safety regulations in their standard configuration, with no additional accessories or breakaway connectors required.

Can shutters be fitted to bay windows?

Yes — bay windows are one of the most common shutter applications. Each facet of the bay is measured and built individually, with L-frames fitted to each section. Angled joins between facets are handled with interlocking posts or filler panels. The louvre size, finish, and frame profile are matched across all sections so the installation reads as one continuous fitting across the full bay.

What's the difference between hardwood, MDF, and faux wood shutters?

MDF is the most common and cost-effective choice — smooth painted finish, stable in normal indoor conditions. Hardwood is denser and more dimensionally stable under heat and temperature variation; it can also be stained or oiled to show the grain. Faux wood uses waterproof ABS polymer louvres on timber frames — suited to kitchens, bathrooms, and conservatories where moisture is a daily factor.

How long do shutters last?

MDF shutters typically last 15–20 years; hardwood shutters 20–25 years or more. The stainless steel hinges are designed for decades of daily use. Louvre tension can be adjusted if slats become loose over time. Painted surfaces can be touched up without replacing the shutter. No blind or curtain comes close to this longevity under normal domestic conditions.

How much do made-to-measure shutters cost?

Shutter pricing depends on window size, style, material, and louvre width — it varies significantly between a single small window and a full bay installation. We give a fixed written price at survey with no obligation to proceed. There are no estimates or price ranges — the number you're quoted at survey is the number you pay on the day of fitting.

Do you offer an express service?

Yes — our Express Shutters service gets faux wood shutters measured, made, and professionally fitted within 14 days of your survey. Express is available across all standard window shapes and configurations. Other materials (hardwood, MDF) are available through our standard range with a 4–6 week lead time. See the Express Shutters page for full details.
